One of the leading purveyors of this soul-deadening philosophy over the past 300 years has been Freemasonry. This may surprise many people, even many good Masons, because the craft effectively hides its real aims under the guise of benign altruism and fraternity. As such, few people today are aware of the malignant Gnostic spirit of Masonry which now infests our modern world. For one thing, Gnosticism is rarely referred to under its proper name. Instead it hides under the banners of “scientific progress,” “higher education,” or various “New Age” mantras.
Gnosticism is perhaps the earliest Christian heresy, going back to the 2nd century heretic, Marcion. Although encompassing many divergent beliefs and forms, Gnosticism can be generally defined as the pretense to a hidden, esoteric knowledge or to secret revelation. Its deepest roots in Egypt and Persia are pre-Christian, though later it passed itself off as Christian by adopting Christian terminology. Marcion taught that material creation was the work of an evil demiurge. He adopted the Docetist belief that Christ had no real body but only the appearance of corporeality. He also rejected the Old Testament and much of the New including all of Matthew, Mark, and John. The Gospel of Luke he heavily redacted to suit his own Gnostic interpretation. St. Irenaeus accuses Marcion of mutilating the Gospel of Luke, removing much of Christ’s teaching, especially statements about his Father being the true Maker of the Universe. So destructive had his teaching become that upon meeting Marcion in the street, St. Polycarp, a disciple of the apostle John, greeted him with, “I recognize you as the firstborn of Satan.”
Gnostic dualism further places the spiritual and material orders into perpetual conflict. In order to reconcile this supposed conflict, at least partially, Immanentism came along in which nature becomes the spiritual force from which everything else, including God, proceeds. In practical terms then, the Gnostic impulse is finally expressed as Pantheism, i.e., today’s preferred New Age religion in which “cosmic energy” plays the role of grace. The idea that nature is solely the creation of God (which Marcion denied) is flipped on its head so that God springs forth from nature and is solely identified with nature. The Christian idea of an omnipotent, transcendent God gets re-framed into the religion of Immanence where God is but a byproduct. This reversal of reality was strongly condemned by Pope St. Pius X in his 1907 encyclical Pascendi in which the Holy Father warned, “(vital immanence) affirms that our most holy religion, in the man Christ as in us, emanated from nature spontaneously and of itself.” The effect is that today we are experiencing all around us, both in the Church (e.g. Laudate Si) and in society, the virtual worship of nature through the various “sacraments” of environmental activism.
So what proof is there that modern Freemasonry is a revival of the old Gnostic tradition? To begin with, during the initiation ceremony to the 30th degree of Knights Kadosh, the candidate is instructed that the “G” in the Masonic Square and Compass actually refers to Gnosis. Furthermore, the so-called Masonic bible “Morals and Dogma” written by the acknowledged highest historical authority in Freemasonry, Albert Pike, clearly affirms, “This religion is Gnostic… Among all the ancients there was one faith and one idea of the Deity for the enlightened, intelligent, and educated, and another for the common people… their doctrines were esoteric, communicated only to a favored few.” He then states, “The communication of this knowledge and other secrets constituted, under other names, what we now call Masonry.” (From instructions on the 13th, Royal Arch, degree in “Morals and Dogma.)
In 1933 an occult expert named Edith Star Miller explained in her book “Occult Theocracy,” “Gnosticism, as the mother of Freemasonry, has imposed its mark in the very center of the chief symbols of this association. It is Gnosticism,,, which is defined by Albert Pike as the soul and marrow of Freemasonry.” By contrast notice that, unlike the Gnostics, the Light of Christ and his Gospel are not reserved for a few select and elite adepts, but the entire message is open to the whole world, rich and poor ~ educated or uneducated ~ whoever may wish to receive it. Even the most profound Christian mysteries are available for the masses to ponder and reflect upon. Christianity has no hidden secret doctrines.
The real Masonic shocker comes when we examine the true source of this esoteric Gnostic “light” intended to illuminate preferred initiates while leaving the common herd in darkness. In fact, it is only upon being “invited” to join those highest few degrees of Freemasonry, from the 30th and above, that the true nature of the cult is revealed. In 1889 Albert Pike, as Sovereign Pontiff of Universal Freemasonry, instructed those highest ranking members of the craft. “The Masonic religion should be, by all us initiates in the highest degrees, maintained in the purity of Luciferian doctrine… Yes, Lucifer is God, and unfortunately Adonay (the God of the Christians) is also God… the true and pure philosophic religion is the belief in Lucifer, the equal of Adonay; but Lucifer, God of Light and God of Good, is struggling for humanity against Adonay, the God of darkness and evil.” Satan thus conveniently transposes good and evil, placing himself as the true angel of light and God as the villainous cause of evil in the world. (Sound familiar? The old, “I just can’t believe in a God who would permit evil,” canard.)
Today, Pike’s shocking revelation regarding Lucifer is probably unknown to 98% or more of practicing Masons, many of whom believe that, in good conscience, they can be members of this organization and even remain good Catholics at the same time. They are being deliberately deceived. The ultimate (yet publicly unstated) end of the craft is not merely to encourage peace, brotherhood, and good works but rather to ensnare as many souls as possible into this diabolical religion. And yes, it is a religion in Albert Pike’s own words. “Every Masonic lodge is a temple of religion; and its teachings are instruction in religion.” That religion is, and always has been, Gnostic and Naturalistic, i.e. the religion of Pantheism. Gnosticism is a false light which illuminates not the path to heaven but to eternal darkness and perdition. The god that it serves is a fraud, a murderer, and a usurper ~ Lucifer, also known as Satan.
Catholics, and indeed all Christians along with the clergy need to wake up and take seriously the threat of Gnostic Freemasonry. We must break this silence, not content to be as Pope Clement XIII bemoaned way back in 1758, “mute dogs who, unable to bark, leave our flocks exposed to the voracity of beasts roaming the fields.” The Church is under a hostile siege today because of past failures to take seriously and to firmly confront the Gnostic Masonic threat. Must we wait for open persecution and forced labor camps before we take action? We are already perilously close to such extremes, but the greater danger is to the millions of souls which are at risk of crashing on the eternal shoals because they are following the false and seductive Gnostic light which increasingly pervades and dominates our dying culture. For them, if not for yourself, be not afraid to pray and speak up.
